The morning ritual.

Most of us are aware of the benefits involved with starting your day with a consistent morning routine. Morning rituals help us frame our day, prime our brain, and prepare our body for a successful day.

Without question I have noticed that when I hold myself accountable to my routine that my day flows in a more positive direction and I also tend to get more accomplished. This is especially true as we dive into the dark days of winter, a season I always struggle with. The cold temperatures combined with less sunlight and general seasonal stresses can wreak havoc on my system.

For the last few months working through some version of the following routine:

5:00: Alarm goes off…on an actual clock. Our phones sleep outside of our bedrooms.

5:00-5:10: Make some green tea and head downstairs to our office and exercise room.

5:10-5:25: Affirmations, gratitude, and prayer. Then I will set one “mission” for the day and 3 big rocks I need to get done. My mission is usually not task related, but more along the lines of things like “bring calm to others” or “do something nice for a stranger”

5:25-5:40: Read. As I write this I’m working through “7 Habits”…yes, I’m nearly 40, I love leadership and self-development books, and I still haven’t read this one.

5:40-6:40: Workout.

6:40: Wake the family, make breakfast and start the daily process of getting everyone out the door on time.

I’m not perfect. I certainly still talk myself into allowing “recovery” days, but I almost always regret it when I do. The routine is key to a great start and is easily manageable as my body adapts to the sleep cycle. If you have a morning routine I’d love to hear about it. Like most things in life, it’s a consistently evolving process but a habit that we can all form to start our days off on the right foot.
